(Informal Exemplification)

  • ...like + N (比如说...)
  • For instance, ... / For example, ...
  • Say, ...
  • Take ... for example, (就拿...来说)
  • ...things like that / ...and stuff like that (……

Do you like to watch films?

Yeah, I'm really into psychological thrillers, like anything by Christopher Nolan. You know, the ones that really make you think afterwards.

(Informal Comparison & Contrast)

  • Having said that, ...
  • Then again, ...
  • But on the other hand, ...
  • It depends.
  • I'm not really bothered about A, but I'm a big fan of B. (我对A无所谓,但我很喜欢B)

问题:Do you prefer busy or quiet places?

Having said that):

Well, it really depends on my mood. Generally, I'd say I prefer bustling places like cafes because I feed off the energy. Having said that, if I've had a really hectic day, there's nothing better than just finding a peaceful spot to read a book.

(Informal Definition)

  • By ..., I mean ...
  • It's basically a place / thing where ...
  • For me, it's all about ...
  • I'd describe it as ...
  • I suppose it's when ...

What do you think makes a good friend?

For me, it's all about):

Oh, that's interesting. For me, it's all about reliability. You know, someone who's there for you through thick and thin. I mean, it's not just about having fun; it's about being a dependable person.

(Informal Anecdotes)

(Spoken Version: I remember once... + It was... + I felt...)

问题:Do you like going to museums?

Actually, yes! I remember once I went to a history museum in London and they had this amazing interactive exhibit. I spent hours in there and it just blew my mind how much I learned without even trying. So since then, I've been kind of hooked.

Do you like cooking?

Yeah, I'm quite keen on it actually, especially making Italian food. For instance, I love trying to make my own pasta sauce from scratch. There's something really satisfying about getting all the ingredients just right.

It depends! I really enjoy cooking for others – you know, having friends over for a big dinner. But on the other hand, cooking for myself after a long day feels like a bit of a chore. So I guess for me, it's more about the social side.

For me, cooking isn't just about eating; it's basically a form of therapy. I mean, I find chopping vegetables and focusing on a recipe super relaxing. It's my way to de-stress and unwind.

I do now, but I used to be terrible! I'll never forget the first time I tried to bake a cake. I somehow mistook salt for sugar – it was a complete disaster! But that's how you learn, I suppose. Nowadays, I'm much more confident in the kitchen.

  • Yeah, definitely. / Absolutely!
  • Actually, yes. / Well, not really.
  • It's funny you should ask, but yes.
  • I'm a bit mixed on that, but I'd say yes.

Do you like swimming?

Actually, yes, I'm really into it. I find it's a great full-body workout, you know, and it's so refreshing especially in the summer. Plus, it's one of the few sports that's actually kind of relaxing.

Is there a lot of traffic in your hometown?

Oh, for sure. I tell you what, the rush hour traffic is an absolute nightmare. It's basically at a standstill between 5 and 7 PM. You'd be lucky to get anywhere on time.

2. Preference 问题 (A or B)

  • Oh, I'd much prefer A over B.
  • I'm more of an A person, to be honest.
  • It depends, but generally I'd go with A.
  • That's a tough one, but I guess I prefer A.

Do you prefer reading books or watching movies?

That's a tricky question! I'm tempted to say I prefer reading because it allows my imagination to run wild. Having said that, I absolutely love a good movie night with friends – it's more of a social thing. But if I had to choose, I'd pick books.

3. "What kind of..."

  • I'm into all sorts of things, but mostly...
  • I have pretty broad tastes, but I'd say...
  • I'm not fussy, but I'm particularly keen on...

What kind of music do you like?

Oh, I have quite a wide taste, actually. I'm really into indie rock and electronic music the most. You know, bands like Arctic Monkeys, and artists like Flume. I find their music is so energetic and perfect for when I'm working out.

4. "Did you..."

  • Yeah, I used to... / Oh, definitely. I remember...
  • Not really, to be honest. / I can't say that I did.
  • Thinking back, I...

Did you enjoy studying history when you were at school?

Actually, no, I wasn't a big fan of it back then. I found it a bit dry and just all about memorizing dates. But looking back now, I kind of wish I'd paid more attention. I mean, history is basically the story of everything, right? It's actually fascinating to me now.

5. "How often..."

  • I'd say pretty often. / Not as often as I'd like to.
  • It varies, but usually... / Once in a blue moon.
  • I make a point of V-ing...

How often do you go to the cinema?

Not as much as I'd like to, to be honest. I'd say maybe once every couple of months? It's kind of a special treat. Actually, I went just the other day to see the new action movie – it was awesome!

6. "When/Where/Who with..."

  • Well, normally I...
  • It depends. Sometimes I..., other times I...
  • I tend to...

Where do you usually listen to music?

Pretty much everywhere! But I'd say the most common place is on the subway. You know, it's the perfect way to block out the noise and just chill. Plus, I always have my headphones on when I'm working out at the gym.

7. "Why..."

  • I suppose it's because...
  • The main reason is that...
  • I guess I... because...

Why do you think people like to travel?

I reckon it's because we all have a natural curiosity, you know? We're just eager to see new places and experience different cultures. Plus, it's a brilliant way to escape your daily routine and basically just recharge your batteries.

Do you like cooking?

Actually, yes, I'm really into it. For me, it's the best way to unwind after a hectic day. There's nothing better than cooking a meal from scratch for friends – it costs an arm and a leg to eat out these days! So yeah, it's definitely my cup of tea.

Do you like cooking?

Well, to be honest, it's not really my cup of tea. I find it a bit of a chore, you know? The last time I tried to bake a cake, it was a complete disaster – I almost pulled my hair out! So nowadays, I only cook once in a blue moon when I absolutely have to.

Are you a busy person?

回答:

That's a good question! I'd say I have my moments. You know, towards the end of the semester, I have a lot on my plate with exams and assignments. I'm a real busy bee then. But during the holidays, I can just chill out and take it easy.
